New work joins “A Spectrum of Solace,” Lu Young’s living collection of atypical antifascist photography. Young uses beauty, delight, & joy — carefully created in-studio, & curated from nature — to deflect the despair & inaction sought by a fascist power structure. Themes of beauty & delight pervade the joyous collection, a festival of color, light, shadow, & form. Whimsical monochrome nature & flower photography stand alongside technically challenging still life compositions & color-drenched contemporary works, including portraiture.

How, though, do beauty, delight, & joy fight fascism? Through their mere existence, and with their complexity. Fascists seek a flat, authoritarian, corporate ethnostate in which dissenting voices can be brutally silenced. Beauty, delight, & joy stand in opposition to unidimensionality, racism, misogyny/misogynoir, sexism, & the myriad other “isms” utilized by authoritarians & fascists to divide society, & maintain & grow power.
